GLB: How long has Espionage been in business?
Taylor: I've been in business 11 years now, opening 11/11/2011. I can't believe I was only 24 at the time. When I opened the store somewhat on a whim because my mom was applying the pressure for me to start a career post college. The idea of opening a store didn't seem like such a huge feat as I had a background in retail. My first job when I was 15 was working at a local shop in San Marino where I grew up. However, opening my own store was definitely a crash course in real estate, accounting, marketing, how to hire and keep good people, security and so much more! If I had known how hard it was going to be I probably would never have done it but thankfully it's all worked out well!
GLB: Where do you find inspiration?
Taylor: I always find inspiration from my European travels. I love the thought of stumbling into a beautiful store that doesn't have a website and is filled with the most unique treasures and clothing that you can only experience if you go there in person.
The store fronts in Paris and old architecture like The Eastern Building in Los Angeles gave me inspiration for the facade of Espionage. We are lucky to be in an old art deco building as well.
I'm also inspired by my family background. On my dad's side my ancestors came over from England on The Mayflower. Hanging in the store are two portraits of my great great grandparents on their wedding day from 1835. My mom's mom fled Kaifeng, the imperial capital of the Henan province of China. Many items in the store reflect that background, from antique silver platters to lots of chinoiserie prints.
GLB; How would you describe Espionage in 3 words?
Taylor: Magical, Nostalgic, Curious
GLB: What is your favorite thing in the store right now?
Taylor: My favorite thing in the store right now are the shortbread cookies from France. They are packaged in the most beautiful tins and are so delicious! I discovered the company when I was recently in Paris and had to get them for the store. They are addicting!!! I also love our vintage barware collection. Most of it is mid-century american made with 22k gold detailing.
GLB: What are your favorite neighborhood spots?
Taylor: I absolutely love being on Beverly Boulevard because there are so many amazing restaurants. Right next door to us is Open Sesame which is such a hidden neighborhood gem. The food is authentic and incredibly delicious. The ambiance is so quaint and cozy. I also love Angelini because it's in a pink building and I'm a huge fan of pink for exterior wall color. My dream would be to paint Espionage pink! Thoughts??
GLB: Anything new you are working on that you’d like to talk about?
Taylor: I'm currently creating marketing materials to promote our corporate gifting. We have been the go-to gift store for Creative Artists Agency since we opened. Word got out and now we work with many of the top firms in entertainment, legan, real estate and more.
We also generate a lot of sales by curating thoughtful and unique gift packages for celebrities, new homeowners and other individuals. Not your run-of-the-mill gift basket.
